When we say Italy, what comes to mind? No doubt you’re thinking of pasta, parmesano and pancetta but what about Portofino, Pisa, and Padua?
Italy is home to so many different towns and cities that are all incredibly unique and unlike anything you’ll see anywhere else in the world. However, you may have seen them in one of your favorite movies.
As a filming location, Italy has alps in the north, beautiful beaches in the south and miles and miles of ancient towns and castles in between. Check out this blog to discover a few films that have been Made in Italy.
For many people, Julia Roberts' performance in "Eat, Pray, Love" inspired them to travel the world on their own and discover themselves. Like Julia, you'll spend several months in Italy where you'll be able to travel in and around Rome and imagine you're in your own movie where you can write your own ending.
Head south of Rome and you'll find the island of Sicily just off the boot of Italy. As the largest Mediterranean island, there's plenty of filming locations but Francis Ford Coppola, the director of The Godfather, was only interested in one: Taormina. Spread across the town are various historic sites, Park Giovanni Colonna, a palace most known for its lush grounds which were designed after the English gardens that captured the heart of the noblewoman who originally owned them.
If you get the chance to go to Milan on your study abroad trip, take some time to think of Timothée Chalamet as you stroll through Lombardia where his 2017 film, "Call Me By Your Name". Many sites around the region are explicitly referenced in the movie and the book that inspired it. Go to the Piazza del Duomo and Fontanile Quarantina to see if you can picture yourself in the film.
A follow-up to the famous, Ocean's 11, this heist film stole our hearts with its many scenes set across Italy, including Lake Como, Rome and Sicily. If you want to visit some of the sights that functioned as a setting for the film in Rome, visit the Grand Hotel Plaza, Piazza Della Rotonda, The British School at Rome, Fuimicino Airport, Anantare Palazzo Naiadi Rome Hotel, Termini Station or get a glimpse of Villa Erba at Lake Como or Tonnara di Scopello in Sicily.
It doesn't get any more authentic than a blockbuster hit about a fashion family who changed the tide of the industry forever. The House of Gucci was filmed all over Italy, but as a student on a study abroad program in Rome, you'll get to walk through Via Condotti, one of the most frequent filming locations for this film, every day.
