For our 7th installment of favorite travel destinations, we talked to SBCC health and wellness counselor and professor Betsy Phillips.
Haven’t we all been dreaming about swimming in a coral reef? Betsy Phillips definitely does dream about it! Being inside, above, or around coral reefs or trees and rivers is her chosen destination to travel! Why? Let's find out!
Betsy Phillips is a part of the Student Health Services Team at Santa Barbara City College. In her position as a personal counselor, her specialties and area of interest includes counseling college students struggling with anxiety and/ or family issues, counseling international students, multicultural counseling, elder counseling, somatic work with many years of teaching Yoga, Pilates, and Dance.
Betsy is interested in all the sources of life that are too quickly disappearing, which is the reason why sh
e chose places with rivers and coral reefs as her favorite destination.
Phillips believes it is best to visit any place inside, above or around trees, rivers, and coral reefs for more than a two-week holiday, because she finds that the forests are disappearing "way too carelessly," and it takes some time for an individual to get aware of it. She continues that "they are wise and full of knowledge, and we need to be living amongst them!"
The must-see and do list for Phillips includes walking in ancient forests and walking in sky bridges. For her being in and trying to protect these magical and endangered places is what she likes most about these destinations. What you should definitely do according to her, is talk to local farmers and to locals who are affected by the loss of these places.
Phillips really enjoys spending time outside in nature and every time she is immersed in nature she learns something new about her surroundings.
Would you be interested in swimming in a coral reef, learning more about your environment and about life that happens outside of the surroundings that you are already familiar with? How amazing that it is possible to connect all of that with continuing your studies at this place as well!
Phillips will co-direct the fall program in Bali, Indonesia with professor Michelle Paddack n 2023. The program is similar to a previous program, which was a big success and very popular with the students. Phillips will be teaching sociology and anthropology.
