What To Do When You Feel Homesick

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

Studying abroad can be one of the most amazing experiences ever. You will get to explore an entirely new and exciting culture, meet new people, and grow as a person. However, sometimes you might feel homesick, which is completely normal, especially if you are away from home for an extended period of time.

So here are a few tips on how to tackle those feelings of missing home.

Firstly, remind yourself why you initially decided to embark on this new journey and be proud that you made it here. Was it because you wanted to explore a new place, learn new things, or challenge yourself? Regardless of the answer, I can promise you that you are most likely doing all those things now that you are abroad. So focus on those initial reasons and reflect on how much you have already accomplished.

Another essential thing to remember is to give yourself time to adjust to the new culture. Some people can adapt to new environments straight away, but if you are not one of those people, then take it one step at a time and prepare yourself for some things to be different. However, who knows, you may even appreciate those differences and find new habits that you bring back home with you.

Also, remember you are not alone in missing home sometimes, so do not be afraid to talk to others about how you feel. It is okay to miss home and still truly love the place where you are now. The best part is that you have both your friends who traveled with you and maybe even some new local friends to turn to for comfort. Moreover, the professors who joined you on your trip are experienced, and this is undoubtedly not the first time they have helped students with the same feelings you might be experiencing. So do not hesitate to turn to them for help; they will assist you in any way they can.

This leads me to the next tip: to get out and do something. Maybe you and your roommates could go out and explore, grab a coffee, or visit a local site that is on your bucket list. It is important not to isolate yourself but instead surround yourself with people you have fun with. This is your time to truly integrate into the new culture and make memories you will cherish for the rest of your life.

Finally, remember that your family and friends are only a phone call away, and soon you will be back home again. Try to appreciate your time away and get as much out of your experiences as possible. Time will pass by fast, so really try to enjoy every second. I promise you that you will look back at this time in the future and be grateful for everything you did while studying abroad.
