5 Famous Movies Shot in Austria and the Netherlands

Updated: Apr 20, 2023

I don't know about you, but some of my travel envy usually starts when I'm watching movies that highlight a city, an unusual landscape, fashion, or sometimes just the setting that looks and feels different from my normal. Here are the movies that have been filmed in Austria and the Netherlands. Let's see if you feel some of that travel envy!

Forget skiing, travel to the Austrian Alps on study abroad and imagine yourself as secret agent 007 heroically saving the world in a snow-packed action film. 2015's Spectre was filmed in skiing towns like Soelden and Obertilliach, so there are many chances to plan a side trip on your study abroad trip to visit the filming locations of everyone's favorite spy movie.

For many Europeans, The Diary of Anne Frank is a movie that allows them to reflect on the history of the continent. For students on study abroad, visiting the building in Amsterdam where parts of the film were shot offers a chance to experience those same reflections as an outsider.

What do you and Tom Cruise have in common? Probably more than you think: his 2015 film Rogue Nation, the fifth in the Mission: Impossible series, was filmed in Vienna, one of the locations where you'll study as a student on the STEM & Art in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands Summer 2022 Program. Every day that you ride the subway, think of the scenes filmed at the Schotternring Station. We'll leave it up to you to determine how accurately the movie portrays its distance from the Vienna Opera House, another destination featured in this film!

No, we're not crying, you're crying. Literary travelers will find an opportunity to relive the heart-wrenching experience of reading The Fault in Our Stars for the first time while walking along the canals of Amsterdam. Film buffs will recall all the scenes from the 2014 adaptation where Hazel Grace and Augustus searched for their favorite writer in the Netherlands. No matter where you first fell in love with the story, on the big screen or on printed pages, Amsterdam will be the perfect place to study abroad and fall in love with the story all over again.

Lake Como wasn't the only filming location to appear in the illustrious Ocean's Twelve film. In fact, those who watched the movie will remember that Amsterdam was the location of the certificate that the team was sent to steal. Kalversraat, Heiligeweg, the Golden Bend and tons of other sites were all featured in the movie so it's possible to spend the whole day on an Ocean's Twelve tour while on study abroad in Amsterdam.
