Matt Kay grew up in Santa Barbara where he fell in love with the natural world, from chaparral-covered foothills and backcountry creeks to coastal beaches and nearshore reefs. This passion for natural history led him to the great forests of the Pacific Northwest, where he earned a BS in Biology from the University of Oregon. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree in marine ecology from the University of Oregon’s Institute of Marine Biology, and a PhD in fisheries and marine science from UC Santa Barbara. He believes that education nourishes the soul and is excited to co-lead the program in Syracuse, Sicily in summer 2025.
When we asked him about his favorite destination, I guess it comes to no surprise that he said Sicily in Italy!
Matt loves the combination of nature and culture in Sicily. He thinks the natural beauty lends itself to teaching life science and geography courses, and he was surprised that there are flamingos in Sicily. Apparently, the Vendicari Natural Reserve is one of the oases for migratory birds and the salt pans of Priolo Natural Reserve is the only flamingo nesting site in Sicily
