How to Choose the Right Study Abroad Program


195 countries, so many choices. Thankfully there are not that many study abroad programs each semester, but deciding between the programs offered is still a challenge for some students. So before you buy a beret and spend autumn in Paris, check out these tips about finding the right program for you.

Personal Interests

Everyone has a place they've always wanted to visit or a culture that really speaks to them. Whatever yours may be, it's probably in one of SBCC's study abroad programs. London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, and Rome are Europe's most iconic cities and Japan's Tokyo is the best city in the world for tourists. Put these together and you've got most of the roster for our destinations this year, so all you have to do is follow your heart.

Language Options

Many SBCC study abroad programs feature courses in the beginner level of the foreign language spoken there. This means you don't have to worry about having previous experience, but having an idea of what language you want to learn is certainly helpful.

Financial Aid

SBCC's programs are more affordable than their 4-year university counterparts, but it's still worth paying attention to the costs of the different programs. Additionally, scholarships are available for different semesters and types of programs, so consider if it's better to apply to a fall program where there are more scholarships, or whether your program is in a destination with specific scholarships like the

Degree Requirements

There's a reason why "study" comes first in "study abroad." These programs are designed to fit into your college degree plan, so think about how the classes offered in each destination match with your long-term goals. If you're really not sure, then try to talk with your academic advisor and see if they have any suggestions about which program is the best fit.
