How to Live Plant-Based Abroad: Best Vegan Restaurants and Grocery Stores for Study Abroad Students

Updated: May 3, 2023

No matter why you choose to go plant-based, it’s a decision that encompasses major parts of your lifestyle like where you eat and shop. Studying abroad doesn’t mean sacrificing your commitments or having anxieties about how to navigate a new environment as a vegan! This blog is for students wanting to save time on their study abroad experience in London, Paris or Rome, by getting recommendations for where to shop and eat as a vegan student. All the restaurants and grocery stores listed are within reasonable price ranges for students and are in central areas easily accessible from public transportation.

London

Santa Barbara isn't the only town with a bustling taco scene; check out London's Club Mexicana for their vegan taco offerings. Don't worry about your carnivorous friends, this restaurant has options for everyone including vegetarians and pescatarians.

Interested in an off-the-beaten path shopping experience? Drop by FareShares, a locally owned, volunteer-run grocery space offering fresh vegetables at a fair price. Check their website for information like opening hours as they may change.

Paris

Paris has no shortage of health conscious restaurants, but the one study abroad students shouldn't miss is Wild & the Moon. This menu was designed by nutritionists and features everything from juices, to shakes and lattes.

Are you worried about missing out on French culinary culture while being vegan abroad? Well, don't be! Un Monde Vegan is a vegan, cruelty-free shop in Paris providing all the French staples in plant-based form. Find everything from stinky vegan cheese to hazelnut waffles here and be sure to tell your friends about it!

Rome

Wind through the bustling aisles of Testaccio market in Rome and you'll eventually stumble into Vegan Store Stall 83, one of the small businesses in this open-air culinary destination. Expect to find all the Italian necessities like pestos, salamis and cheese.

Other restaurants may stop at offering veggie alternatives, but Rifugio Romano goes the extra mile with gluten-free pastas, a daily tempeh chosen by the chef and more vegan desserts than regular ones!
