Studying abroad is exciting—but let’s be real—it can also be overwhelming. From packing to navigating a new culture, there’s a lot to think about. These tips will help you stay safe, healthy, and connected while making the most of your time abroad.
1. Safety First (Always)
Before you even step on the plane, make sure you know how to keep yourself safe and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). It can help if emergencies like natural disasters, civil unrest, or a lost passport pop up. And don’t forget to store emergency contacts in your phone and on a printed copy. You can download the Smart Traveler app from the U.S. Department of State—it’s like your personal safety guide for every country, covering local laws, health recommendations, visa info, travel tips, and embassy contacts.
2. Pack Smart for Your Health

Health care can vary a lot depending on where you’re going. You can check the Smart Traveler app for guidelines, and visit your doctor to discuss vaccines and medications you might need before you leave.
Also, pack a mini medicine kit for the basics—pain relievers, allergy medicine, and stomach remedies. Some common U.S. meds might not be available where you’re going, so it’s better to be prepared. The SBCC Health Clinic and The Well are also a great resource to visit before you leave on your trip.
If you are taking prescription medications, be sure you talk to your healthcare provider and be sure that the medication is legal in the destination. Some medications (i.e. for ADHD) are controlled substances in some countries and may not be imported, or need special paperwork and approval to be brought into the country.

3. Protect Your Stuff (Digitally and Physically)
Make copies of your passport, ID, credit cards, and vaccination records. Take a photo, print a physical copy, and email a digital copy to yourself. Losing documents abroad is stressful enough—don’t make it worse by being unprepared.
4. Stay Charged and Connected
Technology can be tricky overseas. Check what kind of electrical outlets and voltage your destination uses, and bring adapters or a voltage converter if needed. A portable charger is also a lifesaver when you’re exploring all day.
International phone fees can be brutal. Look into local SIM cards or e-SIMs to save money and get reliable service. Just make sure your phone is unlocked before you go.
5. Learn the Local Lingo
Even just a few words can make a huge difference. Learn basic phrases like “hello,” “thank you,” or “where is the bathroom?” It shows respect, helps you connect with locals, and can save you from awkward situations.
6. Know Your Destination

Before you pack, check the weather at your destination for the duration you are leaving. Knowing what to expect helps you pack smart. Apps and websites can give detailed climate info so you’re prepared for rain, shine, or snow. And remember, just like in California, it’s a good idea to layer!
7. Use Apps to Make Life Easier
Apps like Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, or HERE WeGo are a must for getting around, and translation apps like Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, iTranslate, SayHi or Papango are lifesavers when you can’t read signs or menus. Also, research local ride-sharing apps—they may differ from Uber or Lyft. A little prep goes a long way.
8. Have Fun and Immerse Yourself
Finally, remember why you’re there! Study abroad is your chance to explore a new culture, make friends, and try things you never could at home. The more you plan ahead, the more you can enjoy the adventure stress-free. Find out what museums are in the area even if you normally don’t visit museums. Find out about music venues and other local events popular at the time you are abroad. Check out local favorite hikes, restaurants and more. Get outside your comfort zone for the ultimate abroad experience!
Our Academic Adventure Blog is full of stories from students who've gone on the program before you. Read their blogs to see what they did and take notes! Studying abroad can be intimidating at first, but with a little preparation, you can travel smarter, stay safe, and make the most of the experience. New skills, unforgettable memories, and lifelong friendships await—are you ready to take off?
Check out this video from Izzy Bisges or from Jade who have some real life advise for students studying abroad. (keep in mind that they went on programs that are a bit different from the SBCC programs and there aren't quite as many things you need to prepare as SBCC is already taking care of several things.)
