A Favorite Destination That's A Little Unconventional!

Hi, that's me in Costa Rica

Finding one favorite destination is hard, but I think my favorite destination is the ocean. So that means Costa Rica, Hawaii, Sicily, and Santa Barbara are all my favorite destinations. I love the feeling of a small beach town.

I was born in Hawaii and always had family to visit there. I love the tropical feeling and the wildlife that I can discover there. When I was in Costa Rica studying abroad in the summer of 2024, I was on FaceTime with my mom outside, and she said that the wildlife, the sounds of crickets, frogs, and birds, sounded a lot like Hawaii. That really opened my mind up to understanding the location of these places and how they are all affected by their proximity to the equator. In Hawaii and Costa Rica you’re in a constant battle with bugs and mold. However, in Hawaii, they do not have as many predators or dangerous wildlife to look out for.

I learned that it may not be the best idea to go hiking in Costa Rica without a guide or a local who knows the area well. There is a lot of wildlife there to be aware of; a small snake or a colorful frog can be deadly, so you always have to keep an eye out for that. Which is not as much of a concern in Hawaii.

Surfboards lean against trees on a sandy beach. People relax under umbrellas with a blue ocean and cloudy sky in the background.

Most mornings, while I was in Costa Rica, we would go surfing. For me, that was a chance to enjoy my favorite location! The ocean. The vibes by the ocean are always nice and relaxed. When you got in the ocean, however, you had to stay very aware to make sure you were not getting toppled around in the waves too much. In Costa Rica, we were on the Pacific side, meaning that the ocean we were in was the same one that meets the shore in California. The ocean has always been special to me because it is a vast, ever-stretching location that connects all of us together.

So I hope to see you at the beach soon!
