What is a destination that you would like to go on with Study Abroad? London? Paris? Madrid, perhaps?
In our "Favorite Destinations" series we continue to ask students and staff at SBCC to find out what destination is on their bucket list.
Today, we asked SBCC student Marya Mayer for her favorite study abroad destination.
Our first question: If you could go anywhere where would you go?
"If I could go anywhere I would go to..." drum roll please...
Why did you choose to go to Lisbon, Portugal?
"I love Lisbon. It's a nice size city, on the water, with friendly locals who speak English fluently, which makes getting around there easy," On top of that they have "the best vegan restaurants and the cost of living there is cheap. The architecture is beautiful with cobble stone streets, old churches, and the ubiquitous ceramic tiles."
If Lisbon was a study abroad location what would you like to study?
"I would love to study architecture because of all the gorgeous architecture all around. Art history would also be super interesting to learn in order to take advantage of the region's fabulous museums. And I'd also like to learn about cultural anthropology to understand more about locals and their way of life."
What is your favorite thing about Lisbon?
"Lisbon is close to beaches, Sintra, castles, Bom Jesus, and there is so much to do. It's a great, fun, energetic, lively, safe, endlessly interesting city full of charm," she explains "And also all of the friendly people of all generations who are able to speak English. It's super easy to have a long chat and learn more about peoples' lives in Portugal."
Are there any local experiences you would recommend to visit outside the more famous tourist spots?
"I found a great little yoga spot with classes in English that I went to every other day of my two week stay," which made Portugal feel like home for Marya. On top of that Marya explains that "locals love having Sunday brunch and there are many amazing, cheap restaurants to choose from. There are also free offbeat museums like the Money Museum, and haircuts cost a fraction of what they do at home in the U.S."
And that wraps up Marya's favorite Study Abroad destination. Stay tuned for our next interview. See you next time and happy traveling!!
