Best Destinations: Student Picks - Kyra Johnson-Pellicia

SBCC student and music major Kyra Johnson-Pelliccia didn't hesitate to to let us know who her favorite travel destination is.

If she could choose one place to travel to and study, it would be...

Japan!

Here, Kyra answers some of our biggest questions.

Why did you choose this destination?

I'm a music major and my main thing is learning instruments from other countries. Japanese traditional instruments have always been a main interest of mine that I wouldn't be able to fulfill in California

What courses would you want to take there and why?

Music courses. I've always wanted to learn Koto and Shamisen. I would also want to take the language (of course) and cooking classes cause the food there is amazing.

What do you like most about this destination?

The music and food.

If you have been there, are there any local experiences you would recommend to visit outside of the more famous tourist spots?

Kikyo Sushi and Soranoiro Nippon. One is an amazing sushi place and another is an amazing ramen place for those who are allergic to seafood. Also just an amazing ramen place in general. Instead of always walking down main streets you can also walk down some of the alleyways and you can end up at some amazing places. It's how we found a famous (in Japan) gyoza restaurant and some sushi train restaurants.

If you have been there before, what is something unexpected you learned about this

destination? If you have not been there, what are you looking forward to see or experience

there?

How much cash was used. Japan is a very cash based society so it's better to have cash on hand than to have you credit/debit card. Since Japan has a lot of street vendors or small shops that don't accept card or there's an upcharge if you use your card. It's just better to have cash and coin on you. If you don't have a place for coins most wallets in Japan either have a matching coin purse or have a coin purse attached.
