Hi! My name is Leni and I am a student worker for the Study Abroad Office at SBCC! I am originally from Germany and I am here to tell you about one of my favorite destinations today, the city I was born in, Hamburg, Germany!
If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting a city that combines rich history, modern architecture and a beautiful maritime vibe, Hamburg is the place for you. Located in northern Germany, it’s the country’s second-largest city (population of over 1.9 million people) but it has the heart and charm of a coastal town. It’s a city that never fails to impress, whether you’re exploring its historic port, relaxing by the canal or enjoying its vibrant music scene.

One of the first things people notice about Hamburg is the water, that’s because it’s literally everywhere! The city is built around the River Elbe, with canals flowing through neighborhoods and connecting to beautiful lakes like the Alster. Locals love spending time near the water, whether it’s walking along the harbor, renting a paddle boat on the Alster or sipping coffee by the waterfront.
For anyone who loves history and architecture, the Speicherstadt is a must-see. It’s the largest warehouse district in the world built on timber-pile foundations and its red-brick Gothic buildings now house museums, cafés and even a giant miniature railway exhibition called Miniatur Wunderland (miniature wonderland).
If you’re into nightlife or live music, the Reeperbahn in the St. Pauli district is one of Europe’s most famous entertainment streets, filled with bars, clubs and theaters. Beyond the party scene, Hamburg also has a thriving cultural side with opera, jazz clubs and tons of local festivals throughout the year.

For a more relaxed vibe, head to the Schanzenviertel (my favorite!) or Karolinenviertel neighborhoods. These areas are full of cozy cafés, vintage shops / second-hand markets and street art, perfect for a nice afternoon.
What I love most about Hamburg though, is the atmosphere. It’s a city that feels both peaceful and alive at the same time, full of creative energy, yet never too hectic.
If you are planning to come around winter time, make sure to visit Christmas markets! They always have amazing food and the coziest vibe perfect for the holiday season!
So, if you’re planning to study abroad in Germany or just looking for your next travel adventure, I highly recommend adding Hamburg to your list. You’ll fall in love with its charm, culture and character!
